NATIONAL THEATRE ALBANIA
ELECTRA
SOPHOCLES
Premiere April 2010, Tirana Albania
Directed by Adonis Filipi
Human suffering is contagious.
That is why Electra returns again and again across every era, in every society.
Burdened by grief and worn down by misery, Electra, the daughter of King Agamemnon murdered by her own mother, Clytemnestra, and her lover Aegisthus has abandoned the royal palace. Anxiety sustains her—a state shaped by waiting, the urgency of revenge, and the need to restore justice. For a long time now, there has been no sign of life from her brother, Orestes. Alone, she is sustained by a single belief: that he will return, reclaim the throne that is rightfully his, avenge the treacherous crime, and restore justice.
I was amazed when I heard Elektra cry in Albanian. A storm swirling around the stage. A quality impressive show outside the schematic clichés, intertwined with modern elements, accompanied by the rhythmic ringing of wood and stones, as close to nature as the sounds of antiquity. The clarity of the artistic development of the subject, the events, the grandeur of the Sophocles’ word, its detonation and impulses, the discovery of the amazing feelings of devotion, hatred and pain or energy released by the tragedy comprises the and ignite the imagination.
