Adonis Filipi

“A theater of poetic intensity, where image, movement, and illusion reshape the language of the stage”

Adonis Filipi was born in Berat, Albania. He graduated from the Institute of Arts in Tirana (now the University of the Arts) between 1978 and 1982, specializing in Drama. Following his studies, he developed a strong affinity for stage directing, dedicating himself fully to an artistic path defined by both rigor and creative exploration. He began his career with the amateur theatre troupe “Tekstilisti” in his hometown, where his directorial voice first emerged. He later continued as a stage director at the city theatre of Berat, before expanding his collaborations to numerous professional theatre companies across Albania.

A significant turning point in his career came in 1998, when he was invited to work with the renowned Skampa Theatre in Elbasan. There, he achieved notable success with his production of Death by Woody Allen, recognized for its contemporary aesthetic and distinctive directorial language.

Over the course of his career, Filipi has directed more than 70 productions across Albania and internationally, including at the National Theatre of Tirana, the State Theatre of Ankara, Skampa Theatre, and institutions in China, Romania, the United Kingdom, North Macedonia, Italy, Kosovo, and beyond.

His work is distinguished by a refined directorial approach that seeks new forms of expression through the depth of the dramatic premise, often marked by a strong poetic sensibility. His staging reveals a carefully composed interplay of movement, contrast, and visual imagery, creating layered and immersive theatrical experiences.

His repertoire includes major international playwrights such as Sophocles, Euripides, William Shakespeare, Eugène Ionesco, Dario Fo, Howard Brenton, David Mamet, Tennessee Williams, and Woody Allen, alongside prominent Albanian authors.

His productions have received numerous prestigious awards and have been presented at leading theatre festivals worldwide.

In 1999, he founded Albania’s first International Theatre Festival, “Skampa”, which he continues to direct, establishing it as a key platform for contemporary theatre.

Filipi has also contributed extensively to theatre education, teaching acting and directing and leading workshops internationally.
